What You Need to Know This National Foster Care Month

Research tells us that there are approximately 19,000 children in Florida foster care, 600 of which are without identified families. May is National Foster Care Month and we are helping raise awareness about the important role that foster parents, family members, volunteers, professionals, and all other community members play in helping youth in foster care find permanent and stable homes. To help better inform you about how you can play your part in recognizing this important issue, let us share with you some information you need to know this National Foster Care Month.

What is National Foster Care Month?

National Foster Care Month is recognized every May as a way to keep the needs of youth in foster care prevalent in the minds of the public. Created by the Children’s Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Foster Care Month aims to provide recognition and show appreciation for those who assist youth in foster care. The purpose of this important month is also to provide support to foster families and caregivers, who selflessly dedicate their time to caring for vulnerable youth.

How do I get involved?

There are many different ways to participate in National Foster Care Month. One of the best ways is by volunteering your time to support youth in need. This can be accomplished by spending time with children in group homes, fundraising and donating money to the Children’s Bureau or specific homes for youth, or even exploring the possibility of fostering a child yourself.

We also encourage you to check within your local community for specific events that may be held this National Foster Care Month.

Are there resources I can share or look to for guidance?

By working together, we can all help promote family stability and preservation, enact positive change, and meet the diverse needs of youth in the foster care system.
