Unfortunately, vehicle theft is a lucrative crime and one that occurs most often during the summer months. A study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that the cost of stolen vehicles totaled $6 billion in 2017 alone, and the numbers keep rising.
To help keep yourself and your vehicle protected this summer, let us share with you a few important tips to prevent vehicle theft.
First, it is important that you use common sense to help protect your vehicle. When leaving your vehicle, always double-check to make sure you have the key to your vehicle and that you do not leave it sitting in your vehicle. Always close and lock all windows and doors to your vehicle upon exit. When parking in a public area, try to park in a well-lit area, preferably around other vehicles. Further, we encourage you not to leave any valuables in your vehicle, whether they are in plain sight or not.
Second, remember that thieves may attempt to steal vehicle parts, too. Vehicles have many assets that make them attractive to thieves. Research tells us that some of the most frequent items stolen from a vehicle include radios, wheel covers, GPS devices, air bags, and transmissions. This is in addition to personal items left in unattended vehicles, such as purses, cell phones, and laptops. By taking the proper precautions, you can help reduce the risk of attracting thieves to your personal vehicle.
Finally, does your vehicle have an anti-theft device installed?
There are many different vehicle anti-theft devices currently available on the market. These devices can help deter thieves and can alert you or passersby if someone tries to fraudulently enter your vehicle. Anti-theft devices come in many forms, including horn alarms, flashing lights, and steering-wheel locks. Further, there is a specific type of device called an immobilizing device that will prevent thieves from hotwiring a vehicle.
These are just a few tips to help keep both you and your vehicle safe during the summer months.
