As we are all adjusting to what appears to be the “new normal” imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, many parents are wondering if they should allow their children to go trick-or-treating on Halloween this year, and, if so, how can they keep everyone as safe as possible? Are you considering trick-or-treating for your children this year? If you are a parent who chooses to allow your kids to participate in Halloween trick-or-treating this year, here are a few tips to make sure you and your kids stay safe.
- Mask up. As masks are pretty commonplace nowadays, make it fun for your children to choose a Halloween costume that incorporates wearing a mask. You can even let your children decorate their mask as a part of their costume. Make sure that the masks worn still comply with CDC guidelines. Costume masks should not be used in place of cloth masks unless the costume mask is made of two or more breathable layers that cover your child’s mouth and nose.
- Stay outside in small groups. Only trick-or-treat with members of your household or a small group of friends or family so that you can be sure to maintain a safe social distance. Steer clear of any indoor trick-or-treating events and stick to the outdoors.
- Participate in one-way grab-and-go trick-or-treating. Rather than participating in traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating, choose a more socially distant option that allows children to grab an individual goodie bag from a safe distance rather than reach their hands into a bowl full of treats. Talk to your neighbors or other members of your community to see if you can coordinate this type of trick-or-treating as a safer way for children to enjoy the holiday.
