While the day is typically a celebration, unfortunately, a number of accidents are also known to occur. Did you know, for example, that approximately 50,000 fires are caused by fireworks each year? Not to mention, grilling accidents and accidents during water activities occur more frequently during the holiday. As you prepare for this upcoming Fourth of July, let us share with you a few tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe during this national holiday.
First, we know that it would not be the Fourth of July without a fireworks display.
It is imperative, however, that you take proper precautions when operating fireworks yourself. Be sure to light fireworks on the ground and in a dry area, a safe distance away from anyone in the vicinity. As enticing as it may be to light multiple fireworks at once, it is crucial that you refrain from doing so. This can cause an unexpectedly large, and potentially uncontrollable, explosion. Above all, never attempt to make your own fireworks or take commercial fireworks apart, and ensure that you do not allow minor children to be near or operate fireworks.
After a fireworks display, many families opt to cook on the grill.
Unfortunately, a number of grilling accidents are also known to occur during the Fourth of July.
Before grilling, we encourage you to check your grill for any physical defects or gas leaks. Further, keep minor children a safe distance away from the hot grill, and keep the grill a reasonable distance away from any decks, siding, or other flammable equipment that may be outdoors.
If you choose to spend the holiday out on the water, be sure to remember that even fun water activities can have serious consequences. Before heading out on the boat, we encourage you to check you have enough life jackets available for all passengers onboard. Further, it is important that you never consume alcohol while operating a watercraft, regardless of whether you are intoxicated or not, and always ensure you have a first aid kit onboard in the event of an accident.
