Did you know that 84 percent of boating death victims did not wear a life jacket? Unfortunately, this is true, and research tells us that Florida has the highest reported number of boating deaths in the United States.
To help better inform you about the importance of taking proper safety cautions when boating, we want to share with you some important safety tips.
1. Always wear a life jacket.
We know how easy it can be to not wear a life jacket while out on the water. On a day when the weather is particularly beautiful, covering up with a life jacket may not be the first thing on your mind. It is essential, however, that you and your passengers always wear a life jacket when out on the water. This is regardless of how long you will spend on the boat, how fast you are going, and whether you are going to shallow or deep water. Accidents can happen in an instant, so by making it a habit to put your life jacket on every time you step on a boat, you can help protect yourself in the event an accident occurs.
2. Brush up on your swimming skills.
If you are going to spend any length of time out on the water, we encourage you to refresh your swimming skills before your venture. Even if you think you are a stronger swimmer, research tells us that two thirds of boating-related deaths occur by drowning. Having a strong basis and regularly taking a refresher course or spending some time in your local swimming pool brushing up on your swimming skills can make a big difference if you are involved in an accident.
3. Get involved this National Safe Boating Week.
One of the best ways to raise awareness about boating safety is to get involved with National Safe Boating Week. The annual campaign kicks off the weekend before Memorial Day and continues through the remainder of the week. On May 17th, those looking to raise awareness can participate in “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day,” to highlight the importance of wearing a life jacket while out on the boat.
Above all, remember that many boating accidents can be prevented. Making sure you always wear a life jacket, educating yourself about boater safety, and brushing up on your swimming skills can help prevent accidents and increase the safety of boaters.
