Have you noticed the recent influx of electric scooters around Tallahassee? In July, approximately 1,000 e-scooters appeared on Tallahassee streets, marking the start of a three-month pilot program. This program aims to determine whether e-scooters are the right fit for Florida’s capital city, however, the presence of the scooters has raised some concerns, particularly when it comes to safety. When it comes to your college age children, we know that their safety is of the utmost importance to you. Unfortunately, as convenient and fun as e-scooters can be, they also pose some threats if not used properly. As college students prepare to head back to town for another school year, let us share with you a few tips to tell your college age child when driving an e-scooter.
1. Always wear a helmet when riding an e-scooter.
As with all forms of transportation, safety is key. Although not required by law, we encourage all riders to wear a helmet whenever driving an e-scooter. If you are involved in an accident without wearing safety gear, your injuries may be aggravated. Unfortunately, an accident can occur even if it is not your fault. In the event that you are in an accident, wearing safety gear can help minimize your injuries.
2. Abide by traffic laws.
Under Florida state law, e-scooters are afforded the same protections as bicyclists and are held to the same legal standards. To protect yourself and others, it is imperative that you take the time to abide by traffic laws. Always stop at all crosswalks until permitted to cross and be conscientious of pedestrians and other e-scooter drivers on the sidewalks.
3. Never drive intoxicated.
Just as it is possible to receive a DUI while on a bicycle, you can also receive one if you drive an e-scooter while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Although a DUI is based on blood alcohol content, and the legal limit differs by state, it is important to never put your life, or the lives of others, at risk. If you believe you are too intoxicated to safely drive an e-scooter, we encourage you to call a taxi, Uber, or ride sharing service to safely take you to your destination instead.
