Sadly, in 2017 alone, 5,172 motorcycle riders and passengers died in crashes. While motorcycle riders make up approximately six percent of vehicles on the road, the unfortunate reality is that many drivers do not look out for motorcycles when driving. This often results in accidents with catastrophic consequences.
This month, to bring attention to the dangers motorcyclists face on the road, we want to share with you some tips to keep yourself and the people you love safe this Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
1. Always wear safety gear
Motorcycle rider safety starts with safety gear. First, it is crucial that you, and any passengers, always wear a helmet when riding on the road. Wearing a helmet is one of the most effective ways to protect against head injuries. Also, making sure you wear protective gear, such as leather clothing, non-skid boots, and gloves, every time you ride can minimize injuries in the event of an accident, fall, or skid. You may also consider wearing reflective pieces of clothing so others drivers are more likely to see you on the road.
2. Abide by traffic rules
Even as a motorcycle rider, it is imperative that you abide by all traffic laws. Do not drive faster than the speed limit, obey all signs, and above all, never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We also encourage you not to drive when you are drowsy or fatigued, as this can impair your reaction time and increase your risk of getting into an accident.
3. Drive defensively
As a motorcycle rider, it is important to never assume that a driver can see you. Approximately two-thirds of all accidents are caused by a driver violating the rider’s right of way. Be sure to always ride with your headlights on, use your turn signal in advance, and stay out of driver’s blind spots. Driving safely, but defensively, can help you keep yourself and your passengers safe on the road.
