Did you know that May 12 – 17, 2019 is the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (“SAMHSA”) National Prevention Week? Each year, communities and organizations across the nation come together to raise awareness about the importance of strong mental health and substance abuse prevention. To help join this important cause, we want to share with you some information about National Prevention Week and the impact of substance abuse and mental health in our local communities.
National Prevention Week was created to increase public awareness of mental health and substance abuse disorders. The week aims to encourage local groups and communities to implement prevention strategies, create partnerships with federal agencies and national public health organizations, and promote substance abuse prevention and strong mental health promotion resources.
Who can participate?
Anyone can participate! This year’s theme is “Inspiring Action. Changing Lives.” We encourage those who are planning to participate to follow SAMHSA’s daily recognition schedule, which includes guidelines for the topics to be discussed each day.
- Monday, May 13: Preventing Prescription and Opioid Drug Misuse
- Tuesday, May 14: Preventing Underage Drinking and Alcohol Misuse
- Wednesday, May 15: Preventing Illicit Drug Use and Youth Marijuana Use
- Thursday, May 16: Preventing Youth Tobacco Use
- Friday, May 17: Preventing Suicide
Why is National Prevention Week important?
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 19.7 million American adults struggled with a substance use disorder in 2017. Additionally, approximately one in five adults and one in five youth experience mental illness in a given year. These statistics show how substance abuse and mental health affect a significant portion of the population, including our local communities. By raising awareness for these important issues, many people who are struggling can be connected to useful resources and may be encouraged to seek assistance when they need help the most.
We know this can be a difficult topic to think about. In reality, however, substance abuse and mental health can affect anyone.
