Kids love Halloween! School parties, scary costumes, and trick-or-treating make for exciting childhood experiences. While it is an event that we can all get excited about, Halloween also presents a number of safety risks. Did you know, for example, that children are twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than any other day of the year? It is a nightmarish statistic, but one that can be combated through safety awareness.
Let us share with you several ways to ensure your child’s safety this Halloween, as well as the safety of other children in your neighborhood.
- Costumes. Dressing up is a big part of the fun. Make sure that costumes, wigs, and accessories are fire-resistant, and that makeup is nontoxic to your child’s skin. Avoid masks that obstruct vision and apply reflective tape to costumes to alert passing vehicles.
- “Trick or Treat!” Going from house to house, crossing the street, and running through neighborhoods in search of candy presents obvious risks, though they may be lost on children. A responsible adult should always accompany young trick-or-treaters and older kids should be encouraged to stick to sidewalks and well-known areas. Other tips include:
- Teaching your children to never enter a stranger’s car or home.
- Instructing your children not to eat any candy until it is inspected by an adult.
- Concentrating on street traffic and yard hazards rather than your smart phone which could lead to distracted walking.
- Driving. Whether you are driving home from work or making a last minute trip to buy candy, make sure to be extra vigilant on Halloween evening. Do not take for granted that children will be cautious. Also consider:
- Watching for kids crossing the street, standing on curbs, or waiting in medians.
- Being mindful that some children may be wearing dark clothing.
- Discouraging older adults and inexperienced drivers from getting behind the wheel.
- Securing Your Home Against Accidents. Taking steps to alleviate home hazards not only increases safety, but it can also mitigate legal risks. You may want to take steps such as:
- Putting away yard clutter, like garden hoses and toys.
- Clearing debris from your driveway and sidewalk.
- Turning on outside lights and replacing burnt-out bulbs.
- Making sure your pets are properly managed so they do not chase or bite visitors.
