With 2019 in the books, a new year and new decade are upon us. Many people may take the opportunity to make bold resolutions about weight loss, traveling, financial goals, and so forth. Another area to keep in mind, however, is an increased commitment to safety. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 170,000 “unintentional injury” deaths occurred last year, making accidents the third leading cause of death in the United States.
You may ask yourself, “What is an unintentional injury?” Whether fatal or not, unintentional injuries are not simply an “injury” to one’s own person but can often carry tough civil and criminal penalties. No one ever loses with increased safety awareness. In fact, the opposite is almost always the case. Knowing this, let us share several New Year’s safety resolutions to consider for yourself and your loved ones in 2020.
1. Cell Phone Safety. Cell phones are amazing technologies that are now integral parts of our everyday lives. They are also, however, dangerous distractions when driving. States and local governments, including Florida, are increasingly passing distracted driving laws to combat texting and other dangerous phone-related activities. Many of these rules target school zones where children are at risk. Make a New Year’s resolution to put the phone down when behind the wheel and only use hands-free Bluetooth operations, if at all.
2. Safe Choices to Limit Distractions. Other driving safety resolutions include consciously limiting eating, drinking, applying makeup, and similar distracting behaviors. In addition make an absolute commitment against drinking alcohol and driving. A Driving Under the Influence charge, or perhaps a DUI-related accident, can severely impact your life and the lives of others. If you are having a few drinks, make a resolution this year to use a ridesharing service like Uber or Lyft.
3. Increased Safety in the Workplace. Employers and business owners can boost safety and protect themselves from lawsuits by committing to new workplace resolutions. Encourage workers in writing to review all safety and training manuals and to report their concerns at any time.
4. Operational Safety. Finally, commit to maintaining your vehicles. In addition, make the necessary business and home property repairs as potential hazards can lead to expensive lawsuits. It is also a good idea to review your insurance policies and make needed changes.
