Sadly, 366 of the 971 construction fatalities in 2017 were caused by falls from elevation and were preventable. In fact, preventable falls continue to be the leading cause of death for construction employees.
Each year, businesses across the nation hold “stand-downs,” where employees have an opportunity to discuss safety hazards and concerns with their employers. This week, we are helping bring awareness to this important issue by sharing information with you about “stand-downs.”
What is a Safety Stand-Down?
A Safety Stand-Down provides an opportunity for employers to discuss fall hazards in a construction workplace, as well as fall prevention tips. This event is usually voluntary for employees and can provide an outlet for employees to share any safety concerns they may have. Employers may also reinforce workplace safety policies and goals, and encourage open communication among employees.
Who can participate in a Safety Stand-Down?
Anyone can! In particular, employers and employees who are passionate about preventing workplace hazards are encouraged to participate in a Safety Stand-Down. In previous years, participants included commercial construction companies, highway construction companies, sub- and independent contractors, the United States Military, and safety equipment manufacturers to name a few.
How does my company host a Safety Stand-Down?
The key to hosting a successful Safety Stand-Down is to plan ahead. Designate a coordinator to handle the preparations and allocate a specific team to handle the Stand-Down at each of your company’s work sites. Next, consider the types of presentations and activities that will be useful to educate your employees about notable safety hazards in the workplace. Try to make the Stand-Down as positive and interactive as possible, to help encourage participation from employees and ensure that they get the most out of their experience.
Above all, remember that many falls can be prevented. Planning ahead to get the job done safely, utilizing the right equipment, and attending training on how to safely use the equipment can help prevent falls and increase the safety of construction workers.
