5 Ways to Give Back in Tallahassee this November

Fall in Tallahassee is a time of cooler weather, changing leaves, and the beginning of the holiday season, not to mention, college football. Unfortunately, some residents may struggle through the holidays, while others deserve recognition for their selfless service and sacrifice. It does not take a lot to help them. Let us share five gratifying ways to give back this November.

1. Give back beyond Veterans Day. Veterans Day is November 11, and thanking a veteran for his or her service is a kind gesture that lets the veteran know you care. While you may have offered to volunteer to help host the annual Leon County Operation Thank You Breakfast in downtown Tallahassee on the actual day, remember that efforts are year round. Do not wait to learn more about veteran services and outreach throughout the year right here in our home town.

2. Stone Crab Fest Fundraising Event. You may have volunteered to participate in Tallahassee’s 22nd Annual Stone Crab Fest, on Nov. 8. Organizers were looking for 60-70 event volunteers to do everything from setting up tables and chairs, to decorating, registration, silent auction setup and cracking 850 lbs. of crab! One hundred percent of the proceeds went to benefit the Tallahassee Ronald McDonald House, which serves as a home away from home for families while their children undergo extensive medical treatments. Even though the event is over, don’t forget you can still help out! Contact them directly to learn more.

3. Second Harvest of the Big Bend. Second Harvest helps feed hungry individuals and families across the Big Bend region. It is a nonprofit food bank that collects, stores and distributes donated food to 135 partner agencies across 11 counties, and they are always looking for help. You can give back by sending a financial contribution, a food donation, or by participating in a food drive. There are also plenty of opportunities to volunteer your specific talents and skills.

4. Salvation Army Community Thanksgiving Prep-Day Volunteer. Every year The Salvation Army of Tallahassee hosts a Thanksgiving dinner for families and individuals in need of a hot, home-cooked meal. Volunteer to help prepare the holiday dinner for community members in need, and spend some time visiting with them. You will not regret it.

5. United Way of the Big Bend. Love reading and working with young children? The United Way’s ReadingPals program might be a great fit. The Kids STEM Literacy Volunteer Program is also a great way to give back. Sign-up for just two Saturdays in the month of November, and help under-privileged children learn about science, technology, engineering and math. Experience with children is not required, just patience, kindness and compassion.

These are just a few of the ways you can get involved to give back to our local community this November. Remember, giving back is not about a time of year but about a mindset.
