The holiday season is an occasion to spend time with family and friends, and enjoy the spirit of what life is all really about. It’s also a time for opening presents, delicious foods and celebration.
Not everyone, however, is in a position to feel the joy. Thankfully, there are a number of ways to give back in Tallahassee, and doing so might make this holiday season extra special. Here are just a few ways to give back:
If there is something that every child knows about the holidays, it’s that they are supposed to receive presents. Unfortunately, that’s just not the reality for many kids. It’s heartbreaking to think about, but not everyone can afford toys, or is in a place to receive them. Toys for Tots tackles that problem, thank goodness. The organization collects toys and distributes them to children to brighten their holidays. Making a financial donation, or donating toys, can help bring a smile to a less fortunate child.
Homelessness is not just a problem in large cities, but also right here in our own community. The Kearney Center is a place that provides temporary shelter and housing services for the homeless, with the goal of making it rare, brief and nonrecurring. Consider volunteering this holiday season in the kitchen, for a neighborhood cleanup or to help organize a donation drive.
Second Harvest
Second Harvest of the Big Bend is a food bank that distributes food to those in need. A small cash donation can go a long way toward providing a meal for hungry children, families and seniors. You can also donate food, or help organize a food and funding drive.
Two months ago, Hurricane Michael smashed property and lives across the Florida Panhandle. Many families and people in need will not have anything resembling a normal holiday season, but there are things you can do to help. You can make a financial donation or donate your time at Rebuild850, give to one of several GoFundMe accounts, or volunteer to help through Volunteer Florida. Further, we are here to help you, your friends, and neighbors with any hurricane insurance claims right now.
TMH
Volunteering at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital is a great way to give back to the community at any time of year, but especially over the holidays. TMH has a number of volunteer positions to suit your preferences and skills. It’s an opportunity to encourage those facing serious health concerns.
