National Missing Children’s Day is coming up on May 25th. Did you know that many missing children, about 26,500 according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, are runaways and that 1 in 6 of those runaways are likely victims of child sex trafficking? Due to human trafficking playing such a significant role in the reason why our children go missing, consider joining the fight against human trafficking. Let us review three ways you can help.
1. Watch for signs. Learn about the multiple signs and indications that someone may be either a victim of human trafficking or may be engaging in human trafficking. Educate yourself, your children, and your family and friends on these issues so that they can be alert to them as well throughout the community. If you believe someone may be a victim of human trafficking, report it to the local authorities or contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline.
2. Raise awareness. Use your connections in your community and on social media to raise awareness of the issues surrounding human trafficking and its impact on our children. Many people do not realize that human trafficking may be occurring right in their community, which makes raising awareness of these issues even more important.
3. Act. There are many local organizations that strive to address and prevent human trafficking. You can get involved by volunteering, hosting fundraisers, and coordinating letter-writing campaigns to local officials. It takes a village to care for our children and we all should do our part.
